Town Background & History
Nestled in the northwest corner of Winnebago County, the Town of Poygan is a scenic rural community bordered by the tranquil waters of Lake Poygan. Just 15 miles from Oshkosh with a population of 1,307 and neighboring Winneconne and Omro, Poygan offers a peaceful setting rich in natural beauty and historical significance.
Long before settlers arrived, the area was home to the Menominee Nation, who thrived along the lake’s shores. In 1836, the Menominee ceded their land to the U.S. government. A pivotal site in this transaction was the Paygrounds, located in Poygan, where financial dealings were conducted. Today, a historical marker near the public boat landing commemorates this important chapter.
Following the land cession, settlers began arriving in the mid-1800s. The region’s abundant timber and waterways supported early industries like logging and milling. Pine logs were floated down the Wolf River and across Lake Poygan to be processed into shingles and building materials, fueling the growth of nearby towns.
Today, Poygan remains a cherished destination for outdoor enthusiasts, offering fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing. Its historical roots and natural charm continue to shape the town’s identity and community spirit.
